Why More People Are Choosing Private Campgrounds in Alberta
Alberta has a lot of campgrounds. Provincial, national, recreation areas, municipal. Most of them book out months ahead. Refresh the Alberta Parks site at 7 AM, hope for the best, end up with nothing or a site you didn't want. That's the routine for a lot of people.
Private campgrounds don't work that way. You book on the campground's own site, pick the dates you want, and you're done.
What private actually means
It varies. Some private campgrounds are just gravel pads lined up next to each other. Others have real land behind them.
We have over 700 acres on Stoney Nakoda Nation land west of Calgary. Six sections, each with a different feel. Forest, open ground, ridge. Firepit and picnic table on every site, power hookups in Section D.
The biggest difference from provincial sites near Calgary is space. You're not set up 20 feet from someone else's campfire. There's room to actually feel like you're camping, not just parked somewhere.
How booking works
No lottery. No queue. Go to the site, pick your dates, choose a site from the map, pay. Takes a few minutes.
Rates are per night, weekday and weekend, listed right on the booking page. 5% GST. Groups over 6 pay a one-time fee on top.
What you give up
You won't feel like you're deep in Kananaskis backcountry. There's no visitor centre or interpretive trail. If that's what you're after, provincial parks are the right call.
But if you want a weekend out of the city with a fire and some room, and you don't want to plan it three months in advance, we're here.
